Dento-Facial Aesthetics: Complete Your Smile
You may have noticed when a person smiles, their whole face seems to change. In fact, when we smile, up to 43 facial muscles are activated. These muscle contractions cause the skin above them to become crinkled and folded. These are often called ‘expression lines’ or ‘laugh lines’. However over time, the skin above these muscles looses its elastic qualities, creating wrinkles such as ‘Crow’s Feet’ around the eyes. These wrinkles are often an aesthetic concern for people, and a common solution to this issue is anti-wrinkle injections.
Wrinkle Reducing Injections
Treatment with anti-wrinkle injectables involves administering a pharmaceutical grade exotoxin into targeted muscles. Although the toxin is derived from a bacteria, the injection only contains the purified proteins, allowing for very predictable results. The injection works by blocking neurotransmitters in the muscles, and reducing the strength of muscular contractions. The application aesthetically allows for a relaxing of facial muscles, and smoothing of the overlying skin. Beyond aesthetics, cosmetic injections can be used to treat other issues such as TMJ pain or night grinding, by relaxing these over-active muscles.
Dr Yvonne King is trained and certified to administer anti-wrinkle injections by the AADFA. Combining her technical knowledge of dental and facial aesthetics, Dr King believes conservative and careful use of injectables may enhance a person’s appearance in a natural and beautiful way, avoiding the tell-tale ‘frozen face’ look that overuse of these treatments can result in.
Dr King is excited to offer this treatment at the Cosmetic & Laser Dentistry Centre and help patients achieve their complete smile goals all under one roof. If you’d like to know more about our wrinkle relaxation treatments, please call us on (03) 9500 2084, or send us an online enquiry.
Treatment with Dermal Fillers
Treatment with a dermal fillers (known under various trade names) involves the injection of a substance similar to those naturally present in the skin. These substances are found in all living organisms, and are an essential components of skin. As we age, the levels of these naturally occuring components in our skin is depleted, resulting in a loss of volume and skin support, creating grooves, sagging and lines across the face. Administering a dermal filler can restore volume to the skin, and smooth out the lines and grooves in the skin, creating a more youthful appearance. Dermal Fillers can also be administered into lip and gum tissue to address aesthetic concerns such as asymmetrical lips, or filling the large darkened spaces (black triangles) in between teeth or dental implants.
Dr King can administer dermal fillers to treat a range of facial and smile related concerns.
Why see a Dentist for this type of treatment?
Cosmetic injections and fillers have predominantly been the domain of cosmetic beauticians and plastic surgeons, often administered under their supervision by auxiliary staff and nurses. Up until recently, Australian dental practitioners could administer these injections for issues such as muscle relaxation for grinding of teeth. As dentists are recognised for their existing knowledge and ability of injecting into facial anatomy, those trained in aesthetic and facial injections can offer a wider array of treatments to patients to address a range of aesthetic and functional concerns.
What is the advantage of going to your dentist? A dentist, particularly one experienced and trained in aesthetic dentistry, has an especially relevant knowledge and awareness of face and neck anatomy, including the underlying muscle structure and function. Combining this knowledge with an understanding of facial aesthetics, which is essential when creating a beautiful smile, an aesthetic dentist can combine dental treatments and facial treatments to create a total face transformation, with each element of the smile and face complementing one another. Not to mention the convenience of having your entire smile transformation completed under one roof, under the aesthetic guidance and design of one practitioner. Wrinkle injections and dermal fillers have a wide range of smile related applications, including closing black triangles, plumping and reshaping the lips, addressing a gummy smile, and reducing the appearance of wrinkles and creases around the mouth.
There’s more to your new smile than just teeth.
