Frequently Asked Questions about Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation
FAQ: Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST)
A scalpel-free, stitch-free and graft-free treatment option for gum recession.
What is PST?
The Pinhole Surgical Technique®, also referred to as Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation™, is an advanced procedure that can restore your gumline.
How Does the Pinhole technique work?
A special surgical tool is inserted into the affected gum tissue through a small, pin-sized hole. Through this pinhole, special instruments are used to gently loosen the gum tissue. These tools help expand and slide the gum line to cover the exposed root structure.
Small collagen strips are then placed over the tissue to stimulate the body’s natural collagen and elastin production to expedite the healing process and reduce inflammation. There are no grafts, no sutures, and no incisions needed with the Pinhole Surgical Technique. It simply involves the adjustment of the existing tissue.
What are the benefits of PST?
- Correct gum recession;
- Minimal pain and swelling in most cases;
- Can prevent tooth loss;
- Creates a more youthful and aesthetically pleasing appearance.
Am I a candidate for this technique?
The ideal candidate for gum rejuvenation:
- Has no gum disease
- Has healthy gums
- Doesn’t use tobacco or is willing to quit (at least temporarily)
- Has adequate gum tissue adjacent to receding gums
Many people who are not initially good candidates can become good candidates following gum disease treatment or other preparation
How much is this?
The cost will vary depending on how many teeth are needing to be treated. A full examination will need to be conducted prior to proceeding with any treatment.
How long will it last?
With regular dental care and treatment, PST is expected to offer a permanent solution to gum recession.
What are the risks?
This minimally invasive procedure does not require any sedation or general anaesthesia, so there are no concerns over complications arising from these aspects of the procedure.
With a shortened recovery time to the conventional gum grafting, the chances of any post-operative complications from regular oral hygiene practices are greatly reduced. Patients should understand there is still a small risk of developing an infection, swelling, or tenderness, but these side effects are rare.
How long is the procedure and what is the recovery time?
Depending on how many teeth are being treated, PST sessions can typically be completed in as little as 1-2 hours with most patients returning to normal daily activities within 24-48 hours.
Can I Brush and Floss After The Pinhole Surgical Technique Procedure?
We recommend not brushing the gums for a minimum of 24 hours and to refrain from flossing the gum line for the same period of time. This does not mean your teeth have to be neglected for this period, just make sure to stay away from the treated areas of your gums.
Who is Allowed to Perform The Pinhole Procedure?
Only a Pinhole Academy Certified Dentist can offer this procedure.
