What treatments are available for receding gums?

Receding gums can be treated in different ways depending on the severity, symptoms, and whether the area is at risk of further damage. Some people have no symptoms, while others experience sensitivity because the root surface (dentine) becomes exposed. Dentine wears away faster than enamel and therefore requires protection. If the recession is mild, treatment may simply involve improving brushing technique, reducing further wear, and using desensitising products. Where the exposed root is sensitive or wearing down, bonding with tooth-coloured filling material may be recommended to protect the area. In more advanced cases, or where aesthetics are a concern, gum grafting may be advised to cover the exposed root and improve protection and appearance. An individual assessment is important to determine the most appropriate treatment approach.
