Whilst we always strive to ensure every visit to CLDC will be calm and cause as little anxiety as possible, we understand that for some people, a visit to the dentist and the thought of procedures alone can be a source of distress and fear, or even a phobic response.

We want to be able to provide quality treatment outcomes for every patient, and for that reason, we offer Sedation Dentistry at our practice, to ensure each patient can proceed promptly with treatment without the associated fear, anxiety or dental phobia.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation Dentistry is a branch of dentistry designed to help patients relax and feel more comfortable during dental procedures. This is made possible by the use of a type of anaesthetic called intravenous sedation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of Sedation is available?

Our practice has access to IV Conscious Sedation, an intravenous sedation method also known as “twilight” anaesthesia, provided by a specially trained practitioner. Sedation Dentistry, also called ‘sleep dentistry’, removes the fear and anxiety during the treatment, and also provides analgesic relief from pain and discomfort. Patients will experience drowsiness and may even sleep lightly through the procedure. In most cases, you will have no memory of the treatment.

This sedation is provided at CLDC from within our surgery, so unlike going under ‘general anaesthetic’, there is no need to go into hospital for a procedure.

What are the Benefits of Sleep Dentistry?

✓ Alleviates Anxiety and Fear

Sedation dentistry removes dental anxiety and fear, allowing patients to feel more relaxed and comfortable during dental procedures. It can make the dental experience less stressful and traumatic, enabling patients to receive the necessary treatment they might otherwise avoid.

✓ Reduced Pain & Increased Comfort

Sedation techniques provide pain relief and promote relaxation, making dental procedures more comfortable for patients. It can reduce sensitivity, gag reflex, and discomfort associated with specific treatments.

✓ Memory Suppression

With Sleep Dentistry, the IV sedation can induce a partial or complete memory loss of the dental procedure. This can be particularly beneficial for patients who may have had negative or traumatic past dental experiences and want to avoid recalling them.

✓ Pain Management

Sedation dentistry often includes the administration of local anaesthesia to numb the area being treated, ensuring minimal discomfort or pain during the procedure. This can particularly benefit individuals with a low pain threshold or sensitivity.

✓ Can Undergo Multiple Procedures in Just One Visit

Sedation dentistry allows dentists to perform multiple procedures in a single visit, as patients are more likely to remain relaxed and cooperative during extended treatment sessions.

✓ Affordability

Intravenous sedation is a lot less expensive than general anaesthesia.

Who are the Ideal Candidates for Sleep Dentistry?

Many patients can benefit from sleep dentistry including:

✓ Patients Who Experience Anxiety or ‘Dental Phobia’

Patients who suffer from even the most extreme anxiety and fear who say they want‘no needle or dentist near me” can be helped with sleep dentistry.Sedation Dentistry can help alleviate anxiety and fear associated with dental procedures, allowing these patients to receive necessary treatment in a more relaxed and comfortable state.

✓ Patients With a Strong Gag Reflex

Sleep dentistry can help suppress the reflex making dental procedures easier to perform.

✓ Patients Who Require Multiple or Complex Dental Treatments

Sleep dentistry is particularly suitable for individuals who need multiple or lengthy dental procedures, such as dental implants, wisdom tooth removal, or full mouth reconstructions. It enables them to undergo these treatments more relaxed and efficiently.

✓ Patients Who Have Experienced Difficulties with Local Anaesthesia

For some patients who have difficulty becoming numb with local anaesthesia, sleep dentistry can provide an alternative option. Sleep dentistry ensures they remain comfortable and pain-free during dental procedures.

Is it safe? Are there side effects?

Whilst it is rare to experience side effects from sedation, in some cases patients have reported slight nausea, drowsiness, swelling and bruising at the injection site.

Like all medical procedures, there is always a possible risk of complication and reaction to sedation drugs. All equipment and reversal drugs required in the very rare case of an emergency are on hand to manage any such scenario. This will be discussed with our sedation professional during consultation, in which the sedation provider can address any of your concerns.

Am I Suitable for Dental Intravenous Sedation?

Usually if you are aged between 12 – 70 and in good health, you should be a viable candidate for dental sedation. Your selection and suitability for sedation will need to be assessed and approved by our sedation provider prior to your treatment.

Which procedures can I be sedated for?

Usually the more invasive and lengthy procedures may merit from sedation dentistry. Treatments such as implants, advanced oral rehabilitation and oral surgery may find sedation highly beneficial to patient comfort and peace of mind.
