How does TMJ therapy work?

At CLDC, we can ease TMJ symptoms by treating the masseter (lower jaw) muscle with a muscle-relaxing injections. This treatment is effective at reducing the pressure exerted unconciously on the teeth, which may assist in breaking the grinding or clenching habit and relieve symptoms of discomfort and tension.

First, the dentist will diagnose the cause of your TMJ issues. If suitable, we may reccomend treatment with a muscle-relaxing compound. This is the same denatured neurotoxin popularly and safely used for anti-ageing treatments and and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

Depending on how much tension is in the masseter muscle, the number of treatments required and the dose of injectables can vary.

Are TMJ injections painful?

As a dentist, Dr King is well accomplished in safely injecting and has also completed advanced education in dento-facial injectables to administer this treatment comfortably and effectively.

We utilise extremely fine gauge syringes to inject through the skin and directly into the masseter muscle – about 5cm inward from the ear. You will likely feel little or no discomfort, and may not even notice the injection going in at all. After the treatment you may notice a ‘tired’ feeling in the muscle as the injections begin to work.

When will I feel relief of TMJ symptoms?

Most people begin to notice relief of TMJ symptoms within 1 -2 weeks following treatment. As patients vary clinically in terms of the number of treatments they may require, and also the metabolic response in breaking down the muscle-relaxing compound. You may require additional doses if there is no noticeable relief or top-up injections if symptoms return over time.
